Product Education Questions and Answers

Q.Why choose organics?

Jump to Top of Page

A.To obtain organic certification for a product, a minimum of 95% of all ingredients of agricultural origin must be certified organic. The remaining 5% of ingredients however are also bound by strict guidelines. They are, for example, not permitted to be synthetic chemicals or artificially processed ingredients.

The benefits of certified organic products and processes:

  • Independent third-party guarantee of quality, and purity of ingredients.
  • Safe, clean and potent plant extracts of high vitality.
  • Sustainable agriculture that respects, supports and nurtures the complete ecology and energy of our planet.
  • Authenticity and integrity of organic and natural claims.
  • Prevention of damage to the environment and humans by the poisonous chemicals used in conventional agriculture.

While 'natural' and 'organic' claims abound, the only way you can be sure is by using a fully certified organic range of products.

Many may claim to use organic ingredients, but none have achieved third party independent certification.

Q. Aren’t there laws that prohibit unsafe ingredients in cosmetics?

Jump to Top of Page

A.  Not really.  Under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), cosmetics are the least regulated products.  There is no pre-market safety testing, review or approval required for cosmetics by the FFDCA.  The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not pursue enforcement action until after the cosmetic enters into the stream of commerce or sometimes after it is on the shelf.  The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health found that 884 of the chemicals available for use in cosmetics have been reported to the government as toxic substances.  A U. S. General Accounting Office report notes that the FDA has committed no resources for assessing the safety problems of those chemicals which have been found to cause genetic damage, biological mutations, and cancer.  Therefore, due to minimal regulation, products obviously dangerous to your health are legally being sold.

Q.  Wouldn’t the cosmetic industry regulate itself to make sure products are safe?

Jump to Top of Page

A. FDA officials have found that many cosmetic manufacturers lack adequate data on safety tests and have generally refused to disclose the results of these tests. The FDA estimates that only three percent of the 4,000 to 5,000 cosmetic distributors have filed reports with the government on injuries to consumers. In addition, it is estimated that less than 40 percent of the nation's 2,000 to 2,500 cosmetic manufacturers are even registered.

Q.  Is there evidence directly relating cosmetics to health problems?

Jump to Top of Page

A.  In 1990, there were some 38,000 cosmetic related injuries that required medical treatment in the U.S.  That does not take into consideration the many people who use cosmetics and suffer silently from allergies, irritation, and photosensitization, never seeking a physician’s care and rarely connecting their symptoms to the cosmetics they use.

Q.   Why are many cosmetic chemicals harmful?

Jump to Top of Page

A.  The skin is extremely permeable.  That is why medications given in the form of “patches” are effective (i.e. birth control patches and nicotine patches).  Likewise, cosmetic ingredients are most certainly absorbed through the skin.  Some chemicals may penetrate the skin in significant amounts, especially when left on the skin for long periods, as in the case of facial makeup.  One study showed that 13 percent of the cosmetic preservative butylate hydroxytoluene (BHT) and 49 percent of the carcinogenic pesticide DDT (which is found in some cosmetics containing lanolin) is absorbed through the skin.

Q.  How can I protect myself against hazardous cosmetics?

Jump to Top of Page

A.  Read labels and choose products with the fewest ingredients. The longer the product ingredient list, the higher the possibility that it will cause adverse health effects, including allergy, irritation, and cancer.  Become familiar with the list of known and suspected carcinogens and steer clear of products with these ingredients. Handle all cosmetics in a way that prevents bacterial contamination by storing properly, not sharing with others and keeping products capped when not in use.

Q.  What can I do to help ensure that cosmetics are safe?

Jump to Top of Page

A.  Spread the word about unsafe cosmetics to friends and family and encourage them to speak out.  Write letters to cosmetics companies telling them about your concerns and asking them to remove unsafe ingredients from their products.  “Vote with your dollars” by purchasing only the safest, most natural cosmetics available.  Join the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics
